Massachusetts All-Star Math Team 2008-09

All Massachusetts high school students are eligible to try out for the Massachusetts All-Star Math Team, which competes at the American Regions Math League competition. ARML is always held the Saturday after Memorial Day; this year, the competition is on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at four U.S. sites. Two coach buses with nearly 100 students will leave Massachusetts on May 28, destined for Penn State University. The team will practice at Penn State on May 29, then compete there on May 30. The buses will depart for Massachusetts immediately after the competition.

Last year, Massachusetts A was the sixth-ranked team at ARML, of 127 teams competing.

Beginning in 2009, Massachusetts is sending six fifteen-student teams representing the entire state, plus alternates. In previous years, there were three "Eastern Massachusetts" teams and three "Western Massachusetts" teams, plus alternates.)

Tryouts for the 2009 Massachusetts ARML team will be held Sunday, March 1, 2009, at three sites:

Tryouts consist of ten sets of two questions. You have ten minutes to answer each set. In past years, answering eight questions correct has usually been enough to make the team; this year, with double the teams, the number is likely to be lower. The 2007 tryouts are available here, if you want to get a feel for the difficulty of the tryout.
